What is Biogas?

Biogas refers to a gas produced by the biological breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. Biogas is a type of biofuel and is produced by anaerobic digestion by the fermentation of biodegradable materials such as:

  • biomass, both animal and vegetable derived material.
  • green waste (garden, park or crop waste)
  • household food waste
  • food waste from factories (eg production overruns or quality issues), food processors and shops, including out of date products, recalls and supermarket returns
The energy in biogas can be used in several ways:
  • Heat production
  • Electricity production
  • Combined heat and power
  • Transport fuel
  • Injection in to the main electricity or gas grid (gas to grid)
